La Coupe Hauxer

A battle for hockey bragging rights through head to head competition between each of our favorite teams - Devils (Brad), Flyers (Wiley), Penguins (Sam), and Capitals (Fritz/William). The winner(s) gets the historic La Coupe Hauxer and the universal currency of respect/adminiration. The loser(s) gets the Stanley Screwdriver, the universal currency of humiliation and has to buy everyone dinner at the Vienna Inn. Game on!

Playoffs? You're talking about playoffs?

I would be in favor of using the playoffs to break ties ONLY. It's an uneven system which can create unfair advantages based on seeding. I'm dismayed enough that Washington only has 12 games in this thing, while the rest of us play 20.

Here's an example of why this is not a good idea. Imagine Teams A, B, C, all in La Coupe Hauxer. Team A finished the regular season with a 2 game lead in the standings ovber Team B. They play a non-LCH team in the first round, while Team B and C play in the first round. Team B wins their series in five games. Team A wins in four. In the second round, both Team A and B play non-LCH teams. Team A again wins in four, but Team B loses in seven. Team A goes on to win the Stanley Cup.

Now according to the ideas about adding the playoffs to the standings, Team B just overcame a 2-game deficit and won LCH by one game. Team B was given an extra chance to do what they could not do in the regular season, yet Team A was never given the opportunity to counter that. Now do you think Team B should win La Coupe Hauxer? Because I don't, and if I was Team A in that scenario, I would seriously consider leaving LHC after that.

That being said, I'm not opposed to using the playoffs to break a tie, like a shootout. The only consider if that both teams need the opportunity to affect the standings ON THE ICE.

So, you want La Coupe Hauxer to be a President's Trophy?

The way I see it, playoff games between La Coupe Hauxer teams should count, i.e. the Caps vs. Flyers series, but not the Devils vs. Rags series. I didn't realize that was not understood.

I'm not happy that the Caps only play twelve LCH games either, if the NHL would just go back to four divisions this could be corrected.

Given Wiley's schedule, it seems like Friday evenings are probably the best time to get together at the Vienna Inn.

Vince Lombardi once said "We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time." That's the problem behind using the playoffs. I've realized since the start of this that Devils-Rangers would not count. That's the point behind my example. Team A had the title locked up, Team B had a second chance to make up their deficit and did, but Team A never had an opportunity to respond. If we had counted the playoffs, Will/Fritz and Wiley would have been the only ones to benefit. Sam and I could not have gained anything; only lost.

Exactly the point. For example, had Washington beaten the Flyers in game 7, that may have been enough to put the Flyers in last place and let Wiley keep the screwdriver. Then the Capitals would have gone to Pittsburgh, lost in 5 games, and the Penguins would have won La Coupe Hauxer and NJ never would have gotten a chance to defend its title.

As it is, the Caps just decided to duck the Pens...

You wish! Didn't the Pengyunz duck the Flyers to get the Senators?

Looks pretty smart now, doesn't it?

When is baby Yurasko due? That might affect the available Fridays. The weekend of the 10th is out for me.
